Report: Workplace Injuries Still Frequent, Underreported

According to the latest numbers from federal officials, workplace injuries all across American are still increasing and likely underreported. As Huffington Post recently highlighted, the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration believes that, despite the strides made and the legislation passed, up to 50% of all workplace injuries may go unreported by employees and employers.

"OSHA believes that many severe injuries—perhaps 50 percent or more—are not being reported. We base this conclusion on several factors, including injury claim numbers provided to us by state workers’ compensation programs," OSHA writes in its report from last month. "Because the majority of first-year reports were filed by large employers, we believe that many small and mid-sized employers are unaware of the new requirements."

Here are some of the other data from the DOL and OSHA reports:

  • In 2014, 4,679 workers died on the job (up 2% from 2013)
  • In 2014, 1,621 workers 55 and over died on the job (highest since 1992)
  • In 2015, employers reported more than 10,000 severe injuries
  • In 2015, severe worker injury resulted in 7,636 hospitalizations
  • Latino and immigrant workers are most frequently at risk
  • Food processing, warehousing/storage, freight trucking were the most dangerous industries

Are laws helping?

Employers are required by law to report workplace injuries within 24 hours of an accident and within eight if a death occurs. While legislators believed that these laws would help encourage employers to improve conditions for workers, it is still unclear whether or not the laws have been effective in this way.

In certain sectors without OSHA protection—like the ones that are populated by Latino and immigrant workers—the situation is worse.
