National Safety Council Reports 9% Increase in Motor Vehicle Fatalities

According to a report done by the National Safety Council, motor vehicle accident fatalities experienced a 9% increase through the half of 2016 than it did in 2015, which is 18% higher than two years ago. Since January, more than 19,000 individuals have been killed on roads throughout the U.S. and more than 2 million were injured.

If this trend continues to rise, 2016 may stand as the nation’s deadliest driving year since 2007. With Labor Day around the corner, the NSC estimates that 438 people will be killed during the three-day holiday weekend. States that have experienced especially high volumes of motor vehicle fatalities include Florida, Georgia, Indiana, California, North Carolina, Illinois, and Kentucky.

NSC president and CEO Deborah A.P. Hersman states that this recent spike in deaths should motivate Americans to fight for change. “Our complacency is killing us. One hundred deaths every day should outrage us,” Hersman said. “American should demand change to prioritize safety actions and protect ourselves from one of the leading causes of preventable death.”

The National Safety recommends the following safety tips for drivers this Labor Day Weekend:

  • All passengers should be wearing a seat belt on every trip
  • Have a designated driver or arrange alternate transportation
  • Take frequent breaks, especially on longer drives, to avoid fatigue
  • Never use a cell phone while driving
