Independent Mail Conducts In-Depth Study of Nursing Home Negligence

How comfortable is your elderly loved one in an assisted living facility or nursing home? According to a recently-released study by Independent Mail, part of the USA Today Network, the care your loved one receives in upstate South Carolina might not be as great as the nursing home’s pamphlet advertised.

Members of Independent Mail gathered materials, police records, and lawsuit documentations from the last 6 years to get an in-depth look at how nursing homes located in and around Greenville are treating their residents. Specifically, the researchers spent eight months pouring over more than 200 inspection reports, more than 60 lawsuit filings and closures, and more than 100 incidents of abuse or negligence reported to law enforcement. It found ample evidence to conclude that assisted living facility care in the region is “inconsistent” at best.

Verbal Abuse & Other Deficiencies

On the positive side, Independent Mail was able to determine that the number of serious issues in upstate South Carolina nursing homes was less than the national average. However, this does not mean that less serious deficiencies in care were not prevalent. More often than not, elderly residents at nursing homes reported verbal abuse and nonphysical harassment that impacted them emotionally and psychologically. In more than one incident, the researchers came across reports of orderlies berating elderly residents who had accidentally soiled their bedsheets. At least one incident included a nursing home assistant that would not change a resident’s soiled adult diaper.

Bedsores were also a prevalent issue, including in some nursing homes that had an above average rating. A bedsore develops when someone makes little to no movements in bed for days on end. Orderlies are supposed to change sheets and encourage movement in bedridden residents to prevent painful bedsores from forming.
