Summer Road Trip Prep

Summer Road Trip PrepSummer is often the time of year many people decide to take an extended road trip across the United States with their family. The weather is usually temperate enough most don’t have to worry about ice, sleet, or rain on the freeway. However, while summer might be the safest time to take an extended drive, there are a few precautions you could take to make the trip safer.

Get Your Car Serviced

Even if you get your car’s oil changed regularly, if you haven’t been to the mechanic in a few months, you should get your vehicle checked. Your mechanic should monitor all fluids in the car, check the tires, check all hoses and belts, and test the brakes. Likewise, he or she should make sure your hazard lights, turn signals, and brake lights are all working well.

Pack an Emergency Kit

In case the worst occurs, you and your family should be prepared. Make sure to stock an emergency kit complete with a fully stocked first-aid kit. Keep a flashlight, a solar-charged phone charger, nonperishable food, emergency blankets, basic tools, and some extra water in the kit.

Pack a GPS System and a Paper Map

Most smartphones come with a GPS system installed, but you should also make sure to pack paper maps of where you’re heading. If you lose a signal at an essential part of the trip, your passenger can check the paper map to make sure you’re still heading in the right direction. Try to get as updated a paper map as possible to ensure no significant changes to the road have happened since it was last published.

Bring Entertainment

If you’re traveling with kids, you need bring as much as you can to keep them entertained. Pack snacks, water, games, videos, music, books, coloring books, and so on so they have plenty of things to keep them occupied. There is nothing more distracting to a driver than a restless child, so make sure your kid has plenty to do.
