4 Things Look for When Choosing a Nursing Home for Your Loved One

How to Spot Signs of Negligence in a Retirement Home

Nursing home abuse is hidden and typically occurs behind closed doors. However, there are some things you can do to make sure you’re choosing a nursing home where your parent or loved one will be safe, comfortable, and closely monitored. Here are a few litmus tests you should use when trying to determine what your aging loved one’s experience will be like in a certain facility:

  • Taste the food. Many seniors become highly sensitive to food as they age, and giving your loved one legitimate reason to avoid eating will be detrimental to their health. If the food in a nursing home is not visually appealing or enjoyable, it may not matter much whether it includes multiple food groups or meets nutritional requirements.
  • Take a whiff. It’s not uncommon for nursing homes to smell a bit odd, especially because many seniors are likely to have less control over their bodily functions as they age. However, if there is a strong or persistent smell of urine throughout the facility, this may indicate inadequate cleaning practices, which will likely have a negative effect on your loved one.
  • Notice the staff-resident ratio. If medical staff seem hurried, exhausted, and overworked, this is likely a cause for concern. Sometimes poor care is unintentional and happens because the facility does not hire enough staff to provide sufficient attention and care to residents but, regardless of whether or not it is intentional, negligence could have serious (even deadly) consequences on your loved one.
  • Observe the behavior of the staff. If you notice a group of nurses shooting the breeze while seniors sit nearby and stare at the wall, make a mental note. Also listen to the way the staff speak to one another and try to pick up signs of aggression, rudeness, or impatience, as your senior will be on the other end of this behavior if they are placed in their care.
