Tips for Dealing with Road Rage

Tips for Dealing with Road RageUnfortunately, we live in a world where many people act on their first impulse, no matter how negative or unreasonable the emotion may be. Behind the wheel, this can be disastrous. Road rage is responsible for countless injuries, accidents, and fatalities every year–making our roads an extremely dangerous place. It is defined as aggressive or violent behavior stemming from a driver’s uncontrollable anger and can manifest in many unpredictable ways.

Common Signs of Road Rage

Though road rage can be triggered by external factors such as heavy traffic, tailgating, or other stressful stations, some people are simply prone to being more reckless than others. Someone with road rage will engage in risky behavior such as irregular or unsafe lane changes, speeding, flashing headlights, or other erratic conduct.

The next time you find yourself feeling threatened by an aggressive driver, remember these tips to protect the safety of yourself and all others in the car:
  • Don’t take it personally. Keep in mind that if a driver is acting out aggressively, it likely has very little to do with you and everything to do with their own lives or worries.
  • Slow down and let the aggressive driver pass you.
  • Do not get angry or yell back. Remember, your safety is more important than your pride.
  • Keep your eyes straight ahead and focused on the road. Do not make eye contact with the driver.
  • Avoid honking at other drivers unless it is an absolute necessity for safety.
  • If you are being antagonized, keep moving. Do not pull over or get out of the car. Go into a busy, public place and call 911 if you feel your life is at risk.
