About Elmiron

Elmiron is a medication, manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, that is prescribed for the treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC). Interstitial cystitis is also known as “painful bladder syndrome,” a condition in which the bladder retains urine after kidney filtration. The symptoms of IC vary between people, and may include pain, frequent urination, and bladder pressure.

Elmiron works in part by protecting the wall of the bladder from substances in the urine, however, the properties of the medication may also create other issues.

Elmiron Side Effects and Injuries

The use of Elmiron is associated with a multitude of dangerous side effects. One of the most concerning effects of Elmiron use is the drug’s impact on vision. It has been linked to several conditions that cause vision issues and damage the eyes, including maculopathy.

Maculopathy is a category of vision issues related to damage of the macula, the center of the retina. This includes conditions like:

  • Cellophane maculopathy — Also known as epiretinal membranes (ERMs), cellophane maculopathy is a condition that may be asymptomatic, but can contribute to vision loss and vision distortion.
  • Macular degeneration — Blurred vision and vision loss that begins in the center of the eye/field of vision could be a symptom of macular degeneration. It can be treated with medication and surgery.

Anyone with vision damage caused by Elmiron may exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Dark spots on the eye
  • Yellowness
  • Lesions

I Use Elmiron — What Should I Do?

Although the FDA is aware of the research that links Elmiron to vision loss, they have not responded to the claims with a recall or advice for patients. In any case involving dangerous drugs, you should discuss the risks and benefits of stopping the medication with your doctor. Your doctor can recommend alternative treatment options or explain whether or not the risks of Elmiron use are worth the potential side effects.
