Complaints About Essure
Essure is a permanent sterilization device that consists of two tiny metal coils, which are inserted into a female’s fallopian tubes. The metal fibers of the coils stimulate inflammation and scarring, which makes the tubes close and prevent sperm from reaching the eggs.
However, between the time the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Essure in 2002 and December 31, 2015, the government agency received nearly 10,000 reports from women and doctors that claimed the device caused serious side effects, as well as 11 deaths. Out of the 11 deaths, five were fetal deaths after women became pregnant after the Essure procedure.
Common side effects of the Essure device include:
- Movement of the device through the fallopian tubes into the pelvis and lower abdomen
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Tear or puncturing of pelvic organs such as uterus and colon
- Hysterectomy
- Fetal death
- Menstrual irregularities
- Allergic reaction to the device
- Fatigue and joint pain
- Additional surgeries to remove the device and repair organs
By October 2016, the FDA made Bayer (the manufacturer of Essure) add a black box warning on the device’s label. This type of warning is the highest level and means that the device may cause serious injury or death.

Everyone there was very professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. My car was totaled, and I was a little intimidated talking with a couple of other lawyers in Greenville. But with Christian and Christian, not only did they answer my questions, but they did so in a way that made what could have been a hectic situation, easy. Overall, an excellent experience with high quality lawyers who truly go above and beyond and really try to get you the results or answers you need.
