What Is the Microport Profemur Modular-Neck Hip Implant?
This is a metal-on-metal hip implant which features a modular neck, which is essentially an adjustable/moving piece designed to ease recovery by equalizing limb length and balancing the hip. According to the manufacturer’s website, more than 270,000 of these systems have been sold worldwide since 2000.
Why Was the Implant Recalled?
This hip implant has been recalled due to a risk of the modular neck breaking or fracturing suddenly, causing severe pain, limiting your ability to walk, and potentially leading to a host of other complications. Additionally, the movement of the metal parts may potentially cause metallosis, which is essentially a buildup of metallic debris in your muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissue. If you have experienced any complications related to the metal neck fracture, you may be entitled to compensation.
If you experience any of the following complications, call us immediately:
- Sudden, severe pain in the hip
- Trouble walking or unable to walk
- Any serious trauma to the hip or leg, such as falling
- A loss of feeling in the leg
- A tingling sensation in the leg

Frequently Asked Questions – Greenville Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant
Lawsuits against manufacturers of metal-on-metal hip implants, such as Stryker and DePuy, allege that the devices were defectively designed. The lawsuits claim that the metal components can rub against each other, causing the release of toxic metal debris and leading to a condition called metallosis, bone erosion, and other serious injuries. Plaintiffs claim that the manufacturers failed to adequately warn patients and doctors of these risks and, in some cases, rushed the products to market without proper testing.
Metallosis is a form of metal poisoning that occurs when the metal components of a hip implant rub against each other, causing the release of toxic metal ions, such as chromium and cobalt, into the bloodstream and surrounding tissue. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including severe hip pain, bone and tissue death (osteolysis), and the formation of pseudo-tumors. If left untreated, metallosis can cause systemic metal toxicity, which can have life-threatening health consequences and requires a painful revision surgery.
The most common signs and symptoms of a defective metal-on-metal hip implant include unexplained hip, groin, or leg pain; a change in walking gait; swelling around the hip; and a grinding or popping sound from the joint. These symptoms often indicate that the implant is failing or that the patient is suffering from metallosis. If you have a metal hip implant and experience any of these symptoms, you should consult with an orthopedic surgeon immediately.
If you suffered an injury from a defective metal-on-metal hip implant, you may be entitled to a wide range of compensation. This can include economic damages for medical expenses, including the cost of a revision surgery, as well as lost wages. You can also seek non-economic damages for your pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life. In cases of a manufacturer’s willful misconduct, a court may also award punitive damages to punish the company and deter future dangerous conduct.
When a defective medical device or drug injures a large number of people, their individual lawsuits may be consolidated into a mass tort or a multidistrict litigation (MDL). An MDL allows a single judge to oversee all of the cases from across the country to streamline the legal process. The lawsuits against Stryker and DePuy for their metal-on-metal hip implants have been consolidated into separate MDLs.
