What Are Textured Breast Implants?
Textured breast implants are different from smooth breast implants. They have a rough surface and were previously thought to reduce the likelihood of punctures or collapse. Many recipients of textured breast implants choose these over smooth implants in order to avoid shifting or changes in breast shape.
The Dangers of Textured Breast Implants
Textured implants have been known to cause a form of lymphoma known as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Even if a breast implant is not necessarily defective, it can still cause this rare cancer. You may be experiencing symptoms of BIA-ALCL if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Persistent swelling, inflammation, or pain around the breast implant
- Fluid pooling around the breast implant
- Lumps underneath the skin near the implant
Keep in mind that you could develop BIA-ALCL at any time after receiving textured breast implants, even after years without problems. Should you see any signs or symptoms of this rare cancer, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. Then, get in touch with one of our dangerous medical device lawyers in Greenville, SC and let us ensure you are appropriately compensated for the damages you experience as a result of your implants.

Frequently Asked Questions – Greenville Textured Breast Implant
Lawsuits against manufacturers of textured breast implants, such as Allergan, allege that the devices are linked to a rare form of cancer called Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Plaintiffs claim that the manufacturers failed to adequately warn patients and doctors about this cancer risk and that the devices were defectively designed. These lawsuits are consolidated in a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) in New Jersey.
BIA-ALCL is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that can develop in the fluid or scar tissue around a breast implant. It is not a form of breast cancer. Research from the FDA and other health organizations has found a direct link between highly textured breast implants and a significantly higher risk of developing this cancer. BIA-ALCL is typically curable with the surgical removal of the implant and surrounding scar tissue if caught early.
The most common symptom of BIA-ALCL is a sudden and persistent swelling of the breast. Other symptoms can include a lump or mass in the breast or armpit, redness, pain, or a change in the shape of the breast. If you have textured breast implants and experience any of these symptoms, you should consult with a plastic surgeon or oncologist immediately and inform them of your implant history.
If you are diagnosed with BIA-ALCL after receiving textured breast implants, you may be entitled to a wide range of compensation. This can include economic damages for medical expenses, including implant removal and any cancer treatment, as well as lost wages. You can also seek non-economic damages for your pain and suffering, emotional distress, and disfigurement. In cases of a manufacturer’s willful misconduct, a court may also award punitive damages.
The FDA has issued multiple warnings and recalls regarding textured breast implants. In 2019, the FDA requested that Allergan recall its Biocell textured breast implants due to a direct link to BIA-ALCL. The FDA has also placed restrictions on the sale and use of textured breast implants and has required manufacturers to provide stronger warnings and patient education materials. The recalls were put in place to prevent future injuries and deaths from this rare cancer.
