Dangers of Teen Vaping

Dangers of Teen VapingVape pens, known as today’s e-cigarettes, have become increasingly popular amongst American teenagers, attracting young crowds with their modern, minimalist designs and delicious-smelling flavors. While many teenagers feel that vape pens are less dangerous than regular cigarettes, the reality is that the pens are still filled with nicotine that is known for being addictive. Vaping also exposes lungs to diacetyl, which can cause bronchiolitis obliterans.

What Is Diacetyl?

Diacetyl is an organic compound that, as a liquid, is what gives food products its butter taste. However, while it’s safe to eat small amounts of diacetyl, inhaling it can cause bronchiolitis obliterans, or “popcorn lung,” a serious disease that can produce lung issues. In a recent study, researchers found diacetyl in more than 75% of vape liquid that was tested.

Symptoms of popcorn lung include:
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
In summer of 2019, 8 Wisconsin teens were hospitalized due to health issues involving shortness of breath, vomiting, and diarrhea, that doctors suspect were symptoms of vaping. As a parent, the last thing you want is for your young, still-developing child to develop lung problems that will stay with them for the rest of their life.

Other Health Issues Associated with Vaping

Vaping can produce even more health issues than lung damage. Teens may accidentally swallow the e-cigarette liquid, resulting in poisoning. Nicotine, as has been known for the past few decades, can harm parts of the brain that control learning, mood, impulse control, and attention. Nicotine can also increase bouts of anxiety and depression in young people.

Teenagers are still developing in their bodies and minds, which renders them more susceptible to the issues that vaping pens and nicotine can cause. If your child is sick because of vaping, seek medical attention immediately, then contact a team of personal injury lawyers – you may have a case against the vaping company or manufacturer.
