As we celebrate this milestone, we want to reflect on how we got here, the cases that shaped us, and the lessons we’ve learned. Most importantly, we want to say thank you to Greenville for 50 years of unwavering support.

How Our Practice Evolved and Became Christian & Christian
Our story begins in 1975 when Harold Christian graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He joined the Law Offices of John Bolt Culbertson, a personal injury litigation practice focused on helping workers injured on the job, people harmed by others’ negligence, and individuals with disabilities.
Over the years, the firm evolved through several partnerships. It became Culbertson Christian and Moorhead with the addition of Attorney Don Moorhead, then later transitioned to Christian and Davis when Richard Davis joined the practice.
Finding Our Permanent Home in the Pettigru Historic District
In 1985, we moved to 1007 East Washington Street in the historic Pettigru Historic District. Nearly 40 years later, we’re still here—a reflection of our commitment to this community.
Two Generations Join Together
The firm’s transformation into a multi-generational family practice began in 2002 when Harold’s son, Matt Christian, graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law and joined the firm. Three years later, in 2005, Josh Christian graduated from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and joined his father and brother.
Today, Christian & Christian Law is a true family firm. Harold, Matt, and Josh bring over 100 years of combined legal experience to every case. The practice has evolved, but the core mission Harold embraced in 1975 remains unchanged.
Notable Wins That Formed the Direction of Our Law Firm
Just five years into his career, Harold tried a case that would define our firm’s direction for decades to come.
The Case That Changed Everything
In 1980, he represented a family devastated by the preventable death of a young mother. She arrived at an emergency room with symptoms that should have prompted immediate medical attention. The physician failed to provide an adequate evaluation. He missed the signs of a pulmonary embolism. She died—a tragedy that proper medical care could have prevented.
Harold took on the medical institution responsible. He proved the physician’s negligence cost this woman her life. The jury agreed, delivering what was reportedly the first significant medical malpractice verdict in Greenville County history.
That case changed everything. It proved that ordinary families could hold powerful institutions accountable. It showed us where we were needed most. It became the foundation of our medical malpractice practice and shaped our commitment to taking on complex cases others might avoid.

Since that landmark victory, we have built extensive experience in areas of the law where victims face the most powerful opposition. Medical malpractice remains central to our work. Matt has developed a specialized practice that focuses on representing victims of nursing home abuse and neglect. Josh handles complex injury litigation, including products liability, mass torts, serious car accidents, and workplace injuries.

Throughout our 50-year history, we have secured precedent-setting victories before the Supreme Court of South Carolina. These cases did more than compensate our clients — they changed South Carolina law itself. Our appellate victories established new protections in personal injury, workers’ compensation, and medical malpractice.
