Unexpected Types of Distracted Driving

Unexpected Types of Distracted DrivingEveryone knows the dangers of distracted driving, though many continue to partake in behaviors which result in devastating consequences such as accidents, injuries, and even death. Cellphone use is directly linked to distracted driving, but did you know there are many other ways in which a driver’s own behavior leads to an entirely preventable accident?

Though the following driving behavior may seem harmless, these are severely dangerous examples of distracted driving:
  • Pets or passengers – You should never drive with your animal in your lap, and any passengers in your vehicle must take care not to create a dangerous environment. Attempting to discipline any young children in the backseat or letting your pet roam throughout the vehicle are surefire ways to put your life at risk.
  • Eating or drinking – Even if your eyes remain on the road, reaching over for a spilled drink or leaning to grab a napkin could be the exact moment your vehicle meets impact.
  • Daydreaming or getting lost in thought – We all use driving as our thinking time, and this may be the most difficult driving behavior to control. However, getting lost in your thoughts must be avoided at all costs.
  • Smoking – Fiddling through your purse or pocket for cigarettes is highly distracting, as is fiddling with your lighter. What’s more, you might drop a lit cigarette and cause even more harm trying to retrieve it before it leaves a burn mark on the seat.

If you have been injured in an accident because the responsible party was engaging in distractive or negligent behavior, you have rights and deserve to fight for them.
